After the terrorist attack in Vienna, the SPÖ now demands a legal tightening of the citizenship law.
“If someone joins a terrorist organization and wants to participate in combat operations, then he has no right to have Austrian citizenship,” Jörg Leichtfried, deputy head of the SPÖ, told the APA. “A person with a prior history of the perpetrator may not have Austrian citizenship and cannot reside in Austria.”
Leichtfried made it clear that the SPÖ would like a “legal tightening”, “so that the authorities have to withdraw citizenship if certain facts are presented”. Under current federal law, this is not possible. Mayor Michael Ludwig had recently advocated for easier expatriation and said returnees from the Islamic State should be deprived of their Austrian citizenship.
“The law must be changed”
“As is well known, there has been a procedure with the Viennese magistrate to deprive the subsequent murderer with dual Austrian citizenship because he had tried to join ISIS in Syria,” continued the deputy head of the SPÖ club.
However, since it could not be proven that the 20-year-old “actively participated” in the fighting, a withdrawal would not have been legally possible. “Here we have to change the law.”
FPÖ shows abuse of power
Meanwhile, the FPÖ has filed a complaint about the mishaps of the investigation in the run-up to the attack in Vienna on suspicion of abuse of power. The report is directed against unknown perpetrators within the investigating authorities. According to the complaint, the authorities had already learned of the attempted purchase of ammunition by the latest Vienna attacker in Slovakia by September 10 at the latest.
However, the authorities did not file a complaint and the prosecutor or judicial authorities were not informed. According to the report of the Freedom Party, the “Intelligence Service” and “Terrorism and Extremism” departments of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Combating Terrorism (BVT) and the Vienna LVT were informed.
