The Austrian ski men started the season with the worst Sölden result in World Cup history. In the surprising victory in the glacier prelude giant slalom at the Rettenbachferner for Norwegian Lucas Braathen, Stefan Brennsteiner landed as the best rider on ÖSV in 17th position. In second place was the Swiss Marco Odermatt (+0.05 seconds) ahead of Gino Caviezel (SUI / 0.46) and Alexis Pinturault (FRA / 0.49) who led at halftime.
Braathen had not been on the World Cup podium before in his career, the 20-year-old was fourth in slalom at Kitzbühel and fifth in giant parallel slalom at Alta Badia. The other Austrians in Sunday’s ranking were speed specialists Vincent Kriechmayr in 24th place and Matthias Mayer in 25th. Austria had no say in Saturday’s women’s giant slalom, Katharina Truppe was 15th.
Due to the circumstances in Corona, the races in Sölden were organized without spectators and with a clearly defined flow of people. The season will continue on 13/14. November with a parallel giant slalom for women and men in Lech / Zürs
