Szoboszlai arrived in Salzburg from Videoton in early 2017 and developed over the years, initially as a cooperative player in Liefering, to become a regular player and a key figure in the ‘police’. In the 2019/2020 season he was elected the best player in the Austrian Bundesliga. With Salzburg, the twelve-time Hungarian team player was a three-time champion and a two-time cup winner. In 82 games, Szobszlai scored 26 goals and had 34 assists.
“I came as a child and I am leaving as a man. As a footballer, I learned a lot in Salzburg. One of my great objectives with the club was to reach the Champions League. We did this adventure, ”Szoboszlai, who is the 18th player to move from Salzburg to Leipzig, said in a statement. “I am very proud that they allowed me to be there and I would like to thank my coaches, teammates, club staff and all the fans very much.”
“Become an absolute professional”
The club thanked the Hungarians for their achievements and wished them all the best on their way to a top European league. “Dominik came to us as a young and talented player who knew exactly what he wanted from the start. In his four years at FC Red Bull Salzburg he has become an absolute professional who has improved in all areas. He has matured from a talent with extraordinary abilities to a real personality and has shown what he can do not only in the Bundesliga, but also in many international games, ”said sporting director Christoph Freund.
Opportunity for further development
In the Leipzig press release, Szoboszlai said: “The move to Leipzig is perfect for my development, because I will join a first-rate coach and an incredibly ambitious team who are very young but have already gained a lot of experience and have celebrated some successes. I will be able to develop further here and of course I would like to help ensure that the club continues to be so successful in 2021. “
In Leipzig, they were satisfied with the new addition. “We are happy that we were able to sign Dominik Szoboszlai and have him join us in January. From the beginning we had very good conversations with Dominik and his advisor and of course we are proud that he has chosen RB Leipzig, because he had several offers from the best European clubs, ”said RB Sporting Director Markus Krösche, highlighting that the newcomer was already eligible to play Borussia Dortmund on January 9.
