If the season in the German Bundesliga can continue despite the crown virus pandemic, only with “ghost games”. Fans and clubs are now working on ideas to ease at least a little sadness in empty stadiums and to add a touch of humor. There are no limits to creativity.

In early March, Borussia Gladbach and 1. FC Köln faced the atmosphere of a “ghost game” for the first time against the German Bundesliga. The conclusion was sobering. “Without fans, that’s not the kind of football we want,” said Gladbach’s coach Marco Rose. If it depends on fans, Gladbachers should at least not do without their fans’ faces in the upcoming “ghost game”.

The solution: cardboard figures. In the Mönchengladbach fan project, fans can ask to have cardboard figures printed with a photo of themselves. The “cardboard mates” settle in the stadium and are supposed to fill the empty seats despite the lack of spectators. The project has been well received: by Friday, 6,500 photos were in the stadium or in progress, according to the initiators.

“Ghost choreography” in Cologne

Fans in Cologne also want to support their team in games against empty lines as much as possible. According to “Bild” information, a “phantom choreography” should create a small atmosphere at the Rhein Energie stadium in Cologne. Accordingly, banners, flags and posters will be placed on the rostrum. The campaign will be carried out in collaboration between fans and the club.

Mood at the push of a button

But a fan app could also bring the mood back to the stadium during “ghost games.” There are various animation buttons in the app, like clapping and animating. Fans who watch their team’s game on television can press the buttons during the game.

The selected sound is transmitted to the respective club speaker system. The more fans press the individual cheering options, the stronger it gets in the stadium. When fans can really use the app is still unclear. According to the developers of the application, they are in contact with various clubs. However, there are still no concrete test plans.
