The Bundesliga is also preparing for all the eventualities of the next coronavirus season. If there are fewer than 16 healthy players per team, the games will be postponed.
The Bundesliga has prepared for possible scenarios in the face of the crown crisis. A revised version of the prevention concept developed in spring will also be used in the 2020/21 season, which begins in a week. As stated after a joint club conference on Wednesday, the stated goal is the regular end of the season with all rounds.
No promotion or descent if canceled
However, in order to achieve the greatest possible legal certainty and clarity in times of the Covid 19 pandemic, the first and second division clubs have determined how the championships will be evaluated in the event of early termination. To determine who has been promoted or demoted, the entire season (30 rounds) in the 2nd division and the basic and final rounds in the Bundesliga must be completed in its entirety, according to one broadcast.
If one of the two divisions has to be canceled prematurely, there is no athletic promotion or relegation. The decision on promotion and relegation between the 2nd division and the regional leagues is also the responsibility of the Presidium ÖFB.
Different scenarios in the European Cup
Three scenarios were developed for the starting places of the European Cup. If the season ends after round 11-21, the status after round 11 applies, that is, the basic round half time. The status of the 22nd round, i.e. the end of the basic round, will be used to assign the international starting places if the season is to end between the 22nd and the 26th round. In the case of a termination after round 27 to 31, the status of round 27 will be counted.
The concept of prevention stipulates that the “red group” (players, referees, coaches, medical personnel, team managers) must continue to undergo weekly PCR tests. The test results must be available in time (36 to 48 hours) before the respective batch so that a second series of tests can be carried out in case of a positive test. This means that the game can be maintained even in positive cases, said by the league.
The team needs 16 healthy players
In the event that a team has fewer than 16 healthy players (14 outfield players plus two goalkeepers) due to Covid-19 diseases on match day, the club in question may request a postponement. The regulation according to which the referees cannot whistle in all federal states is also suspended. This is to avoid long journeys by the referees.
Bundesliga CEO Christian Ebenbauer underscored the league’s pioneering role for sport in general, but also for culture and the events industry. In spring, thanks to a “joint effort of all those involved”, the season ended in a sporting way. “In recent months, the clubs have worked hard to be as prepared as possible for the new season and, above all, to take on this pioneering role in reinstating the fans,” said Ebenbauer.
