Sobotka’s photo with Marsalek calls FPÖ and NEOS to the scene

Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP), as chairman of the Ibiza commission of inquiry, is once again the target of the other parties. This time it is a photo that is supposed to show the then interior minister “side by side” with Wirecard manager Jan Marsalek at a reception in 2017 at the Austrian embassy in Moscow. The leader of the FPÖ parliamentary group, Christian Hafenecker, now sees this Sobotkas “memory gap” plugged, and NEOS also wants clarification.

Over the course of the Ibiza investigation committee, Sobotka “proved to be quite ignorant of whether he had actually encountered one of the main suspects in the Wirecard case,” Hafenecker recalled in a broadcast. For him, the photo “naturally raises the question whether there were other connections between Sobotka, the ÖVP and Jan Marsalek.”

For many years, Marsalek had closer ties with ÖVP politicians and people around ÖVP than is known so far, said the leader of the NEOS faction in the U Committee, Stephanie Krisper. “These connections are becoming increasingly clear,” he said. Sobotka had hinted that he only met Marsalek briefly once: “the image speaks a different language.”

It is not known exactly where the photo with Sobotka and Marsalek came from. Information about the location, the date of the photo and the occasion has not yet been confirmed. It was first published by the online magazine “zackzack.at”.
