Crisis meeting of governors and education officials: As schools in Austria are threatened with closure due to the increasing number of corona infections, politicians from the federal states connected to a video conference with the Minister of Education, Heinz Faßmann. “The position of all federal states is clear: schools are the last to close in the course of new measures,” says Carinthia Governor Peter Kaiser.
“You have to compare the benefits and harms, and the closure of schools has no epidemiological impact. On the contrary, the number of infections increased during the fall break, when children were free,” said Kaiser. According to Kaiser, there were urgent warnings at the conference: “If we close schools, for example, we will shake up the areas of care, health and safety with duty of care and put parents in great distress.”

According to Kaiser, schools are not only relevant in terms of educational policy, they are also “very important in terms of social policy.” The multiple workload put parents under extreme stress, caused children to have trouble understanding the subject at home, and caused financial worries. “Therefore: Schools should remain open, as long as possible and justifiable in terms of health policy for the entire population,” Kaiser said.
New corona infections can be observed throughout the week, at the end of the week countries’ education officials should again short-circuit at Kaiser’s suggestion, according to the schedule. “Even if the worst happens, there has to be more than just school closings. For example, more protection measures in schools, although we don’t like that either, but everything is better than closing, ”says the governor.
