Julia Dujmovits capped her comeback this year with bronze at the parallel World Cup on Monday in Rogla.
The 33-year-old from Burgenland won the Austrian match for third place in the giant slalom against Claudia Riegler, 47, with a 1.05-second lead. For Dujmovits, who finished his career in 2018, it was his fourth medal at a major event.
“It’s hard to believe. When I crossed the finish line, I had tears in my eyes because it is so overwhelming after such a long time,” said Dujmovits, delighted by her success after her third giant slalom since her return. He had done a lot of work on the material and setup in recent weeks and thanked the service man Manfred.
“I am very happy to have achieved all of this and of course that motivates much more, especially for next season. It is incredible that it was possible in such a short time.”
For Dujmovits even more was possible, as she was already on her way to the final of the semi-finals against Sofia Nadyrschina (RUS) three goals before the goal, but was eliminated. But he consoled himself with his third World Cup medal after two silver medals. In 2014 he won the Olympic gold. Gold 2021, like two years ago, was for the German Selina Jörg. The Allgäuerin defeated Nadyrschina in the final by 0.12 seconds.
For Dujmovits it was an unexpected return to the podium. He ended his career in 2018 after a disappointing Olympics and began his comeback season at the World Cup in late January at Scuol after a dislocated elbow. Before the World Cup, Dujmovits saw himself as an outsider.
In the men’s race, Russia’s Dmitrij Loginow clinched his third world championship title by one hundredth of a second over 40-year-old Italian Roland Fischnaller. The bronze went to Andrei Sobolew, Loginow’s compatriot.
ÖSV’s best man was Lukas Mathies, who was the only Austrian to reach the quarter-finals. In this he had to bow to the later “bronze” Sobolew and was sixth. Surprisingly, Benjamin Karl was eliminated in the standings as 26th and Daniela Ulbing as 24th. They were the only winners of the ÖSV season at this year’s World Cup.
In the round of 16, Dujmovits had beaten Sabine Schöffmann (10th), and Riegler only advanced against Germany’s Carolin Langenhorst thanks to the best qualification (7th place to 10th): because both had the same time at the end. Quarterfinal victories over German favorites Ramona Hofmeister (Dujmovits) and Cheyenne Loch (Riegler) had secured the 53rd Austrian Ski Association medal in snowboarding championships.
Alexander Payer and Andreas Prommegger had already finished in the eighth. On Thursday, the medals will be awarded in the slalom parallel world title fights (10.30 / 14.45, each ORF 1 live), which will be contested independently for the first time.
Olympic champion Ester Ledecka canceled her World Cup start on short notice. At the moment, she cannot even hold her snowboard over her head with one hand, explained the 24-year-old Czech, who did not specify her injury. Your goal now is to be ready in two weeks for the final of the Ski World Cup in Lenzerheide. Ledecka won Olympic gold in 2018 and two snowboard world championship titles, as well as the Olympic Super-G in 2018 among alpine runners.
