Snow alert! First city closes parks and cemeteries – the weather

Massive snow masses create a state of emergency, especially in southwestern Austria. The city of Villach is now drawing conclusions.

The heavy night snowfalls create dangerous situations on the streets of Villach and in the parks. In many streets, such as Maria-Gailer-Straße, Pestalozzistraße or 10. Oktober-Straße, the wet and heavy snow has damaged the trees and the branches are in danger of breaking.

For this reason, at least on Wednesday, all parks such as Stadtpark, Schillerpark or Mitterlingpark, as well as cemetery complexes, remain closed. Dobratschstraße must also be closed at least on Wednesday due to dangerous situations with trees.

Avoid unnecessary paths

There is a risk of branches breaking under snow load throughout the city. The risk of snow breaking may even increase during the day, as it is possible that it will rain depending on the weather forecast. Avoid unnecessary routes, both on foot and by car!

Employees of the Wirtschaftshof and Stadtgarten, as well as private partners, fight against the amount of snow with combined forces. In a first step, we have managed to make passable especially those roads on which bus routes operate. The emergency services ask for patience with the sidewalks. Here it may still take a while until all areas are cleaned.

“My thanks to all the emergency services who have ensured that the snow is removed throughout the night,” says Mayor Günther Albel. Calls on the public to pay urgent attention to the signs prohibiting stopping and parking throughout the city center “This is the only way we can remove the snow masses from the edge of the road.”
