Slovenian Martin Cater sensationally won the men’s alpine skiing World Cup downhill race in Val d’Isere with start number 41. The 27-year-old beat Carinthian Otmar Striedinger (+0.22 seconds) and Swiss Urs Kryenbühl (+0.27 seconds) in his first victory on Sunday, resulting in a surprising podium finish. The start of the race was completely open almost to the end, because the incline became faster with increasing sunlight.
After the Super-G and the Swiss Mauro Caviezel, there was also a debut victory in the descent at the start of the sprint races. The elite drivers who came in low numbers were beaten that day, World Cup winner Aleksander Aamodt Kilde (NOR) did better with a flawless unit in fourth place. Matthias Mayer was eighth, Max Franz twelfth. Daniel Hemetsberger, who was so strong in training, was fired after a fall while driving, allowed to drive again, and finished in 29th place.
After the snowfall of the last days, the track was relatively well prepared and the Savoy region presented itself in a dreamlike climate. Speed runners continue in Val Gardena.
