Empress Sisi may have been dead for over 120 years, but her life is still fascinating. This is impressively demonstrated in three planned series.
Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary (1837-1898), Sisi, from the cult kitsch films Ernst Marischka with Romy Schneider (1938-1982), Sissi has also been a favorite, to this day, dazzling life and the tragic death of the former empress von fascinates. Austria This becomes clear these days when you look at the series planner. Apparently, there are three productions in progress, each trying to compete for the favor of story-loving viewers. Here are the competitors …
Netflix’s “The Empress”
The newest challenger is called “The Empress”. This is a German in-house production of streaming provider Netflix, for which Katharina Eyssen (37) will be responsible as Creative Director. With her as a screenwriter and show runner, a successful collaboration was achieved in the form of the mini series “Time of the Secrets”. “The Empress” should initially consist of six episodes, the duration of the episode is expected to be 45 minutes. Casting work is still ongoing, a lead actress has yet to be announced.
TV Now event series
Producers Story House and Satel Film are also planning a “Sis (s) i” series, in which the original plan was to start shooting in 2020, as reported by “DWDL” in February. The Corona crisis should have spoiled the calendar. TV Now, the streaming service from media group RTL, joined as the German broadcast partner of the event series, which also has six episodes. Stefan Brunner, Sabine Thor-Wiedemann and Andreas Gutzeit act as screenwriters.
American edition in the style of “The Crown”
Last but not least, the American site “Variety” exclusively reported on a “Sisi” series. Interesting here: According to the report, Amy Jenkins (54) was able to get an experienced screenwriter and showrunner who also participated in the Netflix series “The Crown”. Allison Pataki (36), “The Accidental Empress” and “Sisi: Empress on Her Own” will be used as models for American production.
In due course, it must be shown how the three series will finally be received by the viewer. The creators of the three productions apparently want to draw a more realistic and modern image of the empress than in the case of the well-known and popular movies, but poorly transfigured with Schneider as Sisi.
