Tourist accommodation companies can reopen in two and a half weeks. There is uncertainty among hoteliers in this regard, as precise guidelines have so far been lacking.

After the Corona blockade, tourist accommodation facilities can reopen from the weekend of Pentecost. The industry is unstable because there are still no precise official requirements for this. Until May 29, hotels and guest houses have only two and a half weeks to prepare everything according to the rules. “Planning is almost impossible,” said tourism consultant Ennemoser Consulting.

Delivery time is too short

In any case, a delivery time of perhaps a week is too short. Because the statements made in theory did not always hold firm in practice. The hotel industry is much more complex than gastronomy, which is starting again this Friday after a two-month crown shutdown. “For this reason, the rules for the hotel industry should have been drafted before those for the catering sector,” emphasized managing director Klaus Ennemoser, former president of the hotel industry association at the Austrian Chamber of Commerce, in a press release on Tuesday.

The general rules on distance and hygiene, which also apply to gastronomy, are well known, according to the Tyrolean tourism consultant. What is missing are the specific rules for the hospitality industry that entrepreneurs could follow. Industry experts agree that the necessary measures cannot be implemented within a week. What is missing are important parameters for strategic decisions, that is, whether and to what extent you can open a hotel.

Delivery bottlenecks are feared

In the absence of regulations and guidelines, district owners still don’t know how much capacity and food they should have. It is also unclear whether structural measures will be necessary to open it in a manner compatible with the crown. The fear is that rules announced shortly before opening could also lead to bottlenecks in delivery.

The industry still cannot get an idea of the extent to which the tourist infrastructure will be available from the weekend of Pentecost. However, this is an important part of the hotel’s product. Because the tourist not only wants to sleep, he also wants to do something.

“These are just a few essential questions that need to be answered before the business planning process can begin,” said Ennemoser. Marketing, hiring employees, and purchasing from vendors can only be done after a valid business plan. Drafting contracts and work commitments for employees is already necessary today. “And the parameters for such financial planning are lacking.”

Industry experts expect delays in reopening

The industry insider expects delays in reopening: “You will probably have to differentiate between a theoretically possible and practical opening date.”
