The important second-round elections in the US state of Georgia for two Senate seats have turned into a tremendous game: after the vast majority of the votes were counted, according to the US media, opponents almost tied in both races Wednesday night (local time). Control of Congress is at stake in voting. To take power in the Senate, Democrats from President-elect Joe Biden would have to win both elections.
Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock challenge former Republican incumbents David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler. Shortly before midnight, CNN reported a Republican Perdues lead of just 456 votes, with more than four million votes counted and a tally of more than 95 percent. In the second runoff, Democrat Warnoch was a bit clearer, but he was still ahead. Fox News broadcast similar numbers.
The second round of elections in the southern state will determine the future majority in the US Senate and how much room for maneuver future US President Joe Biden can expect in the first two years of his mandate. Because the outcome of the Georgia election depends on whether Biden’s Democrats can still gain control of the Senate.
Republicans have a majority seat
Republicans under outgoing US President Donald Trump have only one more seat to maintain a majority in the parliamentary chamber. The Senate confirms, among other things, presidential candidates for high government positions or the Supreme Court and can block legislative proposals.
On November 3, in parallel with the presidential elections, about a third of the Senate seats were put to the vote. In Georgia, however, none of the Senate candidates achieved the required absolute majority in the first round. That made the second round of the elections necessary.
The two Democratic candidates would have to prevail, for there to be a tie with 50-50 votes in the chamber. Then future US Vice President Kamala Harris could ex officio resolve a deadlock in favor of the Democrats. It was not clear at first when reliable results would be obtained from Georgia. The authorities had stated that the result could be available on Wednesday morning (local time). (apa)
