Bayern Munich led by world footballer Robert Lewandowski and with great effort avoided a resounding false start of his company Triple Defense 2021.
The title collector went 0-2 in the break against the surprisingly bold FSV Mainz 05 and defended the league table lead at 5: 2 (0: 2) with a bang.
Burkardt & Hack lead Mainz 2-0
Jonathan Burkardt (32nd) and Alexander Hack (44th) gave the cheeky outsider the advantage, who had not won any of his last six competitive matches. But the monsters of Munich’s mindset returned in series after being eighth behind in the league and avoided the first bankruptcy at home in more than 13 months: midfielder Joshua Kimmich (50th), troubled kid Leroy Sane (56th ), substitute Niklas Süle (70th) and double packer Lewandowski (75th, foul penalty / 82nd) met.
Mainz interim coach Jan Siewert, placeholder for new coach Bo Svensson, wanted to bravely “push” Bayern, and his team did so brilliantly. Siewert chose a classic diamond in front of the four in the back, which cleverly narrowed the gaps and managed to outnumber the offense with quick changes. Munich’s newly formed midfield with Kimmich, who was in the starting lineup for the first time since early November, and Corentin Tolisso was often not keeping up.
Bayern captain Manuel Neuer had to save against Burkardt for the first time in the fifth minute. As a result, a game was developed that was much more open than anyone expected. Shewert had feared that Mainz would “have to stay lower,” but that was not the case for a long time. Even if the Munich offensive stars around Sane, who replaced Kingsley Coman (strain), had chances because of their class.

At 0: 1, Burkardt’s Jerome Boateng felt he was being pushed against the rules; the record champions protested loudly, but to no avail. The until then discreet Lewandowski had the tie in the foot (36º). But pro rookie Finn Dahmen, who represented FSV regular goalkeeper Robin Zentner (back) well, made a strong stop. Even Robin Quaison could have increased (40th), which Hack did with his head after Daniel Brosinski’s free kick.
Neuer avoids 0: 3 against Latza
After the break, Neuer avoided 0: 3 against 05 captain Danny Latza (48th). It was the last wake-up call for Bayern, who were more stable with substitute Leon Goretzka in midfield and now trying to catch up. Lewandowski hung up on Kimmich, who hit the connection with his head. The midfield manager himself braced himself for Sane, who, as Arjen Robben once did, shot from the right inside and executed it skillfully from 18 meters.
Mainz remained brave, Quaison hit the crossbar (59th). Only a forceful shot from the forward Süle finally turned the tide. A Leandro Barreiro foul on Serge Gnabry resulted in the penalty, which “Lewa” scored his 18th goal of the season. Gnabry limped off the field afterward, Lewandowski adding goal number 19.
