The start of the CEV Champions League season could not have been better for SK Zadruga Aich / Dob. The Bleiburger won his first match in the home tournament at the JUFA-Arena against the sensational Bulgarian champion Neftochimik Burgas 3: 1 (25:22, 25:19, 16:25, 25:20)! On Tuesday, Aich / Dob will face another top team at Dinamo Moscow. The game starts again at 8.15pm (XYZ Sports live stream).
“A great moment, not only for us, but for Austrian volleyball as a whole! No one thought that we would have the Bulgarian champions and their best players under control for long stretches and it is sensational. It was a high-class game in which our young team struggled incredibly. All the players were strong today, but if there is one to stand out, it is Matthew Passalent. The young Canadian replaced Regan Fathers in the diagonal position on short notice and did an excellent job, ”enthused Aich / Dob Sporting Director Martin Micheu.
Passalent advanced to the local top scorer with 16 points. Max Landfahrer was responsible for 14 points. Nikolay Nikolov scored 15 points for Neftochimik Burgas, Denis Karyagin 13 aces 7: 7, attack points 43:45, blocking points 9: 7 and personal errors 27:32.
The first round of the tournament (Group D) will take place entirely at the JUFA-Arena. The game will be played in a “double round robin” format until Friday. That is, each team plays four games. Only the winner of the group will advance to the second round. If Aich / Dob does not advance, the switch to the CEV Cup occurs. There he would finish second in the group against Dukla Liberec (CZE) or third against Mladi Radnik Pozarevac (SRB).
