Second blockade in Israel: “a disaster”

Measures like exit restrictions and store closings must be in place for at least three weeks. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said late Thursday that in view of the high number of infections in recent days, further toughening of measures might be necessary. “I will not hesitate to impose additional restrictions if the need arises,” he said.

“A disaster”

Many countries have reacted to the increase in crown numbers with local measures. But Israel is now taking action at the national level, and therefore is a pioneer around the world.

The opposition harshly criticizes the government’s crown course and the second blockade. The crisis has already hit the country’s economy badly. The summer unemployment rate was more than 20 percent. Opposition leader Jair Lapid recently said that citizens would be punished because the government had failed. “This blockade is a mistake, it’s a disaster.”

Like many other countries, the Israeli government had already imposed a blockade in the spring to contain the pandemic. With this he achieved success; however, after the relaxation, the numbers rose again. More recently, the number of new infections each day rose repeatedly to record highs. In May they were in the double digit range for a long time.

Exit restrictions and closings

During the second closure, schools and kindergartens should now remain closed. They will also have to close hotels, shopping centers, leisure centers and beaches. Restaurants can only sell away from home. Grocery shopping and doctor visits are still allowed. However, people can only move more than 1,000 meters from their home in exceptional cases.

It was not clear to what extent the population would adhere to the rules. Important holidays are Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur in the lockdown period. There have also been weekly protests against Prime Minister Netanyahu’s coronation policy. Defense Minister Benny Gantz announced that the army would support the police with 1,000 soldiers to enforce the measures.

“Don’t get a third chance”

President Reuven Rivlin called on the citizens of Israel to come together and work together. “We must do everything we can to restore personal, medical and economic trust among our fellow citizens,” he said in a televised address to the nation. “This is a second chance and we have to take advantage of it because I’m afraid we won’t have a third.”

The previous high of new daily infections was recorded last Tuesday at 5,523. Arab and ultra-Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods are the hardest hit by the recent surge in numbers. Larger families often live together there in a confined space, so the chains of infection can only be broken with difficulty.
