NASA’s mini helicopter is slated to be shipped to Mars in the summer. It has now been dubbed “Ingenio” (ingenuity).
A senior student from the US state of Alabama suggested the name, and her idea was selected from around 2,000 submissions, NASA said Wednesday (local time).
The helicopter is said to have departed for the red planet aboard the Perseverance rover in July or August and landed on Mars in February 2021. NASA scientists hope to have a panoramic view of Mars.
The helicopter weighs just under 1.8 kilograms so it can cope with the planet’s thin atmosphere. It has a fuselage the size of a softball, and its rotor blades are said to rotate ten times faster at 3,000 rpm than in a helicopter on Earth.
