Keeper Simona Gabrisova managed to take a special snapshot at the Schönbrunn Zoo: the young koala peeked out of the female Bunji’s bag for the first time and was photographed by her.

“The young animal was born in mid-April, but no one had seen it before. I got my cell phone right away to take pictures,” Gabrisova said Wednesday.

Exciting: First baby koala at Schönbrunn Zoo

Since the beginning, since 2002, she and her team have cared for the koalas in Schönbrunn. The first offspring is exciting for them too. “You may not see the young animal for a few days, but over time it will take its head or even a small foot out of the bag more often.”

The koala has been growing in its mother Bunji’s pouch for more than five months. As big as a bean at birth, it is now the size of a fist.

The baby koala only drinks breast milk; you should have a Pap smear

Gabrisova: “At the moment, the little girl only drinks breast milk.” Soon she will also consume the so-called Pap, a special form of excretion of bacteria from the mother’s intestinal flora. These microorganisms are important later to be able to digest eucalyptus leaves. Father Wirri Wirri doesn’t notice much of this. He is not involved in parenting and just watches everything from a distance.
