On Thursday, Cardinal Christoph Schönborn of Vienna addressed the population with a New Year’s Eve address. He also commented on vaccination.
In his year-end address at the end of the year, Cardinal Christoph Schönborn described the recently initiated coronavirus vaccines as a “ray of light.” This would give “hope to end the endless pandemic of the crown.” He also announced that he would be vaccinated “naturally”. “Because of my age and my previous illnesses.”
Of course, Schönborn also knows very well that the pandemic is associated with “dark clouds”. Therefore, the question of how things will go is a worrying one. Now, at the end of the year “in which we have experienced very strongly how fragile our world is”, he asked himself what gives us support and hope. He himself answers the question with creation, good in people and trust in the “dear God”, who makes sure that everything turns out well.
“The good is stronger than the bad”
The year was positive for nature, she had “been able to rest”. The cardinal is convinced that many experienced the environment more “consciously” last year and rediscovered the blue sky. Schönborn also expressed optimism that the good in people is “much stronger than the bad.” He referred to the terrorist attack in Vienna. “We have seen how much generosity and help there is. How much goodness there is in the heart of man.” Even if the goodness in people is sometimes “very, very hidden,” it can be awakened, according to the Archbishop of Vienna.
As for “dear God, as we say in Austria”, the Archbishop of Vienna said it would be good “because God is good”. To be good, of course, it also takes human effort: “We have to do what we can to do good.” If this is successful, “then we can enter the next year with confidence.” Despite the uncertainty caused mainly by the crown, Schönborn is clear: “The good is stronger than the bad.” With this in mind, the cardinal wished everyone a Happy New Year in 2021.
