“I don’t want distance education, I want to go to school!” Wrote Eleven-year-old Flora Leichtfried from Wieselburg in a note her mother Katrin posted on Facebook. Most of the compulsory school pupils who have studied at home since Tuesday feel like the pupils of the first class at BG / BRG Wieselburg. There are childcare options in schools and kindergartens, but they were not used much when the first closure occurred in spring. Even now principals don’t expect full classes.
“However, the support is presumably more accepted than during the first lockdown,” says director Martin Hörmer. He runs the Gaming, St. Anton / Jeßnitz and Puchenstuben elementary schools. The closure was a surprise for him and his team. “They assured us all the time that the compulsory schools would remain open,” he struggles to understand the decision. “It would have been better for school operations if we had switched to shift work. However, that should have happened a little earlier, so we might not be where we are now, ”he says.

Principal Manuela Gutlederer of Purgstall Elementary School recorded more registrations for daycare at the school. The second block was more relaxed: “There was a lot to regulate and prepare. It will again be a great challenge for parents, children and teachers. But we are prepared and we know it will work. ” Gutlederer is most concerned about children’s learning success: “Recently a teacher told me that now we have made everything up and are ‘good at it’ again. Now it’s over again ”. Principal Sigrid Fritsch of BG / BRG Wieselburg noted not so much gaps in knowledge but rather disorders of concentration and changes in social behavior in her students after the first lockdown: “Many children were no longer used to taking something seriously. And you realized how much they missed their friends. ” The director criticizes the closure of the schools: “We have complied with all hygiene regulations and we have only had a few positive cases. We prefer to keep it open. “
Eva Hottenroth, president of Scheibbs Elementary School Parents Association, sees failures, not just from the schools, but especially from the school owners: “The schools reacted too late. For the protection measures against infection to be more effective, school owners have to spend more money ”. Ventilate alone, and that in the middle of winter, is not enough. Air purification devices, bigger rooms, more space: “These are necessary investments for everyone’s health. Children in particular have to be worthwhile for society, ”says the mother of two.
