Will Thiem win the first Grand Slam title on the fourth try?
The US Open Mission reaches its climax for Dominic Thiem on Sunday. With a 6: 2, 7: 6, 7: 6 victory over Daniil Medvedev, the 27-year-old Lichtenwörther became the first Austrian to reach the final in New York. It is Thiem’s fourth final in a Grand Slam tournament after the French Open (2018 and 2019) and the Australian Open (2020), which is also unique in the history of national sport!
In the final there is a showdown against Alexander Zverev. The German celebrated a sensational comeback in the semifinals against Spaniard Pablo Carreño-Busta after a 2-0 run and left as the winner at 3:22. The 23-year-old from Hamburg, currently number 7 in the ATP rankings, is the first German tennis player in the final of a Grand Slam tournament since Rainer Schüttler in 2003 at the Australian Open.
In a direct comparison with Zverev, Thiem leads 7: 2. The last three games were all for the Austrian. Most recently, Thiem won the semi-finals in Melbourne in four sets earlier in the year. One thing is already certain in advance: on Sunday, a newcomer will enter the list of Grand Slam winners.
