Vaccines previously approved in the EU (from Biontech / Pfizer and Moderna) also work on the most recently emerging variants of the coronavirus in Britain and South Africa. The vaccines had triggered the desired reaction with 16 mutations so far, tropical medicine and vaccination expert Herwig Kollaritsch said Wednesday. Postscript: “May be different on the 17th.” But that’s not a cause for concern, because mRNA vaccines “can be converted” and adapted in two days.
In a panel discussion organized by the Association for the Promotion of Immunization Education, the experts tried to dispel the uncertainties. It’s harmless to get the corona vaccine despite common allergies, said MedUni Vienna social medicine specialist Ursula Kunze. Only those who have already had an allergic reaction to vaccines are not suitable for it. In people with underlying chronic diseases, “there were no abnormalities” in the course of vaccines. In contrast, long-term side effects “such as organ damage, headaches and breathing difficulties” have already been proven in the case of Covid 19 disease, Kunze said. For them and Kollaritsch there is no alternative to vaccination “if we want to go back to the old normal without blockages.”
42 million people vaccinated
So far, 42 million people worldwide have been vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2. Kollaritsch paved the way for new mRNA vaccines. Only small parts of the virus’s genetic information would be injected. “Basically, the body plays with the vaccine itself and immediately gives it an immune response.” The vaccine itself “breaks down in an instant” and cannot change the human genome. Despite rapid development, the vaccines have been tested extensively, in approximately “ten times more test persons” than in the case of the tick vaccine.
Can you transmit the virus despite being vaccinated? To be able to answer this question with certainty, it is still too early, Kunze said. But there are reasons to be optimistic. Kollaritsch has doubts that the plan to vaccinate 1.7 million people over 65 by the end of March will be upheld. Time is short and unevenly large additional deliveries are expected. Therefore, no one should be blamed.
