MUNICH (dpa-AFX) – The “Anno 1800” strategy game from Mainz Ubisoft Blue Byte studio is the “Best German Game”. The developers received the highest prize of the German prize for computer games due to the crisis of the crown in a “digital gala” on the Internet. The strategy game “Anno 1800” is the seventh episode in Ubisoft Blue Byte’s “Anno” series, which is particularly successful in Germany. The goal is to found towns, cities, and metropolises, keep residents happy, establish colonies, and establish important trade routes. The player can decide whether to advance the story as a visionary, exploiter, conqueror, or liberator.

The creators of Mainz’s “Anno 1800” should now be used to awards. There was an award for “Best Game Design” in Berlin at night. And about four months ago, Ubisoft received several title awards at the German Developer Award in Cologne, including “Best German Game”. The game also received the award for best PC game at the Gamescom games fair in Cologne in 2018.

Among the three nominees for the best German game was the game “Through the Darkest of Time” by developer Blackbird Paintbucket Games from Berlin-Kreuzberg. The game did not go completely empty, but it received the “Best Serious Game” award. Games in which the focus is not on entertainment but on conveying a serious background are recognized in this category.

“Through the Darkest of Time” takes the player to the time of the Nazi regime in 1933. The task is to organize resistance to Hitler using the few available means. The game was “more relevant than ever,” said lauder Odile Limpach, a professor at TH Cologne. Above all, the game asks the right question: how would it act? Manufacturers want to donate part of the prize money to the Seawatch organization.

A jury of 40 had previously selected the winners in 15 different categories out of a total of 15 categories. The award ceremony was based on criteria such as fun, entertainment, artistic quality, innovative content, or educational and didactic value.

Again, an audience award was awarded. For this purpose, players were able to vote for their favorite in a four-week online vote. This year’s award goes to Poland. The community prize was awarded to the fantasy game “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt” by the Polish developer CD Projekt RED on the war-torn adventures of the warlock Geralt von Riva in Temeria.
