Vienna (OTS) Today, Saturday, October 3, 2020, the annual national civil defense test alarm occurred. Between 12 noon and 12:45 pm, the three civil defense signals “Warning”, “Alarm” and “All clear” were broadcast throughout Austria after the “Siren Test” signal. The test alarm serves on the one hand to check the technical equipment of the alert and alarm system, on the other hand to familiarize the population with these signals and their meaning.

This year, a total of 8,221 sirens were tested for functionality, with 99.61 percent (8,189 sirens) working properly. Detailed results for individual federal states:

  • Burgenland: 100%, all 319 sirens worked,
  • Upper Austria: 100%, all 1,430 sirens worked,
  • Vorarlberg: 100%, all 226 sirens worked,
  • Lower Austria: 99.84%, four failures with 2,450 sirens,
  • Styria: 98.83%, 15 failures with 1278 mermaids,
  • Salzburg: 99.80%, a failure with 502 sirens,
  • Tirol: 99.69%, three failures with 963 sirens,
  • Vienna: 99.44%, one failure with 179 sirens,
  • Carinthia: 99.08%, eight failures with 874 sirens.

Overall, failures in the federal states were 0.39 percent (32 sirens; 0.29 percent in 2019 and 24 sirens).

This year a test has been reactivated via the new app-based population alert system “KATWARN Österreich / Austria”, which is available free of charge for smartphones, but also as an SMS and email service and , if necessary, together with the siren signals to warn the population. It can be used.

Austria has a well-developed alert and alarm system, which is operated by the Federal Ministry of the Interior together with the offices of the state governments. Austria is one of the few countries that has a full siren warning.

Currently, the signals can be transmitted by 8,221 fire sirens. Depending on the dangerous situation, the signals can be activated centrally from the Federal Alert Center in the Operations and Coordination Center (EKC) of the Ministry of the Interior, from the state alert centers of the individual federal states or the centers district alert.
