The great interaction in Formula 1 continues! McLaren announces the signing of Daniel Ricciardo.
The 30-year-old Australian will sign a multi-year contract with the British F1 team starting in 2021. Ricciardo has been driving for Renault for the past two years, before that he was with Red Bull Racing.
Ricciardo takes over Carlos Sainz’s cabin and becomes a teammate of the young Lando Norris. Ferrari will shortly announce Sainz’s commitment to replace Sebastian Vettel.
It’s also official that nothing will change since Sebastian Vettel’s last change to McLaren.
Ricciardo’s first reaction on Twitter
Ricciardo has so far won seven Grand Prix (all with Red Bull Racing), most recently in Monaco in 2018. He has been driving for Renault since last year, but has not yet achieved a win with the French and will leave after two years.
“My next chapter hasn’t started yet, so let’s finish firmly,” Ricciardo tweeted.
“One step in our long-term plan”
“Hiring Daniel is another step forward in our long-term plan and it will add an exciting new dimension to our team,” said Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing.
“Daniel has proven to be a winner of the race. His experience, commitment and energy will be a valuable addition to McLaren and our mission to return to the top of Formula 1,” adds team boss Andreas Seidl. “I am convinced that with Daniel and Lando we have two riders who will delight our fans and help the team continue to grow.”
