Red-Pink in Vienna would be young, new and full of vigor: the choice of Vienna

What coalition will Vienna get? Red-black with the “old ÖVP”? Or dare Ludwig Rot-Pink – a comment by “Today”-Editor Eva Dichand.

The right-wing parties did not live up to expectations or did not even make it to the local council, the SPÖ grew stronger and the Greens did not meet internal hopes. And suddenly, Mayor Michael Ludwig can choose between four coalition partners, always excluding the FPÖ. A comfortable situation. Behind the scenes, it has long been heard that Birgit Heblein and her Greens cost the mayor more nerves than they solved the problems with him. Aside from “more trees, fewer cars,” they had almost no political content, aside from pigeon ambulances, girlie cafes, and a queer museum for Vienna.

A lot of reality comes to Ludwig

Michael Ludwig, on the other hand, has to run a city, facing a lot of real problems. These range from improper integration of immigrants, German problems in schools, lack of affordable housing to thousands of unemployed and countless companies going bankrupt for the foreseeable future. It is very close to reality.

One wonders if it is going to break new ground, aside from a red-green coalition.

Turquoise – With a significantly better direct line to the federal government. That should at least be worth considering. It will probably depend on whether Gernot Blümel insists on moving to Vienna as deputy mayor. As is well known, Ludwig doesn’t like it that much. The mayor would prefer someone from “old ÖVP”. The president of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, Walter Ruck, is frequently mentioned. If the ÖVP sends him to coalition negotiations, then the ÖVP would probably be Ludwig’s first choice. We’ll see if Chancellor Sebastian Kurz can jump into his own shadow.

Or something completely new, a coalition with the Neos? That would be a whole new territory, but young and full of vigor. Partly left, partly economically liberal. The Neos completely lack experience as a ruling party, but they have a strong drive to finally have a voice. That would be, as announced on Sunday (see video), exciting and would make Vienna more colorful.

So it can be quite exciting.
