The Prime Minister of Poland, Mateusz Morawiecki, went into quarantine after having contact with a person infected with Covid-19. “The government continues to function normally, I am in constant contact with all employees and all services,” Morawiecki wrote on Facebook on Tuesday. He called on citizens to show responsibility.

The prime minister’s coronavirus test came back negative, government spokesman Piotr Müller said Tuesday night. However, Morawiecki remains in quarantine for now and must wait for his doctor and the state health authority to give the green light.

The prime minister had contact with an infected official from the special SOP unit, which is responsible for protecting the government, a government spokesman said. Other members of the cabinet would not have to be quarantined. Morawiecki Chancellor Chief Michal Dworczyk said the prime minister was feeling fine and would be staying in a purpose-built government building for the duration of the quarantine.

It was unclear whether he would be able to attend the EU summit in Brussels on Thursday and Friday. The decision will be made by health authorities and doctors, Müller told the Reuters news agency. According to media reports, former health minister Lukasz Szumowski had to go to a hospital due to a Covid infection.

Poland had reported a growing number of new corona infections in the last week. Last Saturday, the record was 5,300 new infections registered in 24 hours. Since the weekend, the mask requirement for the general public has been reintroduced, celebrations are limited to 75 participants. Poland has about 38 million inhabitants. 3,101 deaths have been reported in connection with the pandemic since March.
