Salcher for the third time athlete of the year with a disability
After 2014 and 2017, skier Markus Salcher won the disabled athlete of the year election for the third time. The only thing Carinthian is missing is a victory over winner Thomas Geierspichler’s record.
Salcher was chosen by 85 sports journalists. Second place went to triathlete Thomas Frühwirth (68), canoeist Markus Mendy Swoboda received 34 votes and was third.
The result for women was even clearer. Visually impaired skier Veronika Aigner from Lower Austria won with 103 votes and, together with her sister Elisabeth, who is on the piste as her guide, received for the first time the “Niki” for disabled athlete of the year.
In second and third place were skier Melissa Köck (31 votes) and javelin thrower Natalija Eder (27 votes), the winner of 2016. (In this election, the athlete of the year is chosen directly, there is no point system ).
Special Olympics Awards to Sabrina Bichlmair and Lukas Kaufmann
For the second time after 2019, the Special Olympics athletes were chosen by members of Sports Media Austria. In the women’s category, speed skater Sabrina Bichlmair from Tyrol impressed with gold in 333m and 500m at the National Winter Games and garnered 140 votes.
Burgenland snowshoe runner Susanne Laschober (25m gold and 50m silver at the National Winter Games) received 36 votes and came in second. Speed skater Sandra Dumitraschkewitz from Styria (gold in 222m and silver in 111m at the National Winter Games) received 10 votes and therefore took third place. (In this election the athlete of the year is chosen directly, there is no point system).
In the men’s category, the title of Special Olympics athlete of the year goes to Vorarlberg this time. At the National Winter Games, skier Lukas Kaufmann won gold in giant slalom and Super G. Reason enough for 82 sportswriters to pick him first. Second place (59 votes) went to Upper Austria cross country skier Benjamin Ennikl, who won gold in the 50m and 100m games. 43 votes went to Carinthian snowshoe racer Markus Oberwinkler. The two-time gold medalist at the National Winter Games (400m and 800m) is third.
Nina Burger is a sportswoman with a heart
An athlete with a heart is someone who does outstanding work for his fellow men and convinces with fair play, moral courage, or a willingness to help in the humanitarian or social field.
The Austrian Lotteries have been awarding this prize since 2013 in cooperation with Sports Media Austria and Österreichische Sporthilfe, which is endowed with 5,000 euros related to the project. Sports fans were asked to vote for their favorites out of 10 nominees through online voting. The winner was national record soccer player Nina Burger, who is heavily involved in the “home soccer” project.
The project offers more than 100 people in 20 fully supervised shared apartments in five federal states (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland, Styria and Upper Austria) weekly and free soccer training. It was financed by crowdfunding through the platform “I believe in you”.
People with disabilities are considered a COVID-19 risk group and are the most affected by security measures, so Burger not only supported the application of the player pass club, but also managed one or another unit himself .
