Like many other things, this not-so-bad quality fell into disrepute in the Corona crisis. Almost every government in the world wanders between appeals to personal responsibility and strict regulations. Some of the citizens want clearer guidelines, others are outraged by each new restriction. What is unpleasant or perhaps fair about this virus is that the number of infections is also increasing among strict Germans and more liberal Swedes. Local hospitals are not yet overburdened, but the worryingly rising infection rate will be followed by an increasing number of seriously ill people. Therefore, the virus should not be taken lightly.
But that doesn’t mean we should all turn our brains over to Father State. Personal responsibility is necessary right now. Without wanting to ignore the chaos in the Ministry of Health: To act sensibly, regulations formulated down to the last detail are not always needed, but prudent leaders: both in companies and in schools, in cultural institutions and ordinances. School principals, for example, have never been asked so much: suspect cases and positive testers every day (so teachers are more likely to infect students than the other way around). Also, exasperated parents who waver between hysteria and anger that their children are repeatedly sent home.
Nothing will relax the situation like an extensive antigen test. They are cheap, relatively accurate, and give results in minutes. We need this across the board as quickly as possible so that schools and hotels can be open and events can be held. By private initiative, tests have been carried out much longer and faster throughout the country than is officially registered. A big step forward is that tests are finally possible – against the resistance of the medical association – with general practitioners.
Vaccination will take some time, but simpler (self) testing will help reduce risk. The Austrian talent for improvisation is still in demand. But please don’t loiter and hover between bureaucratically excessive rules and their careless non-compliance. Because that has probably caused the current mess.
