It will soon be “normal” for other airlines as well, says Qantas chief Alan Joyce: As soon as a corona vaccine is available in large quantities, your airline will only allow passengers to board with proof of vaccination.
AWe are concerned about the further spread of the coronavirus, the Australian national airline Qantas wants to introduce mandatory vaccinations for its passengers.
As soon as a vaccine is available, the airline’s terms and conditions will be adjusted accordingly, Qantas chief Alan Joyce told Australian broadcaster Nine News on Monday.
While the next steps for domestic flights have yet to be decided, the situation with intercontinental connections is clear: “We will require international travelers to be vaccinated before allowing them to get on board.”
In her own words, Joyce assumes that her airline is not alone in this, but similar rules will be introduced around the world. “I think it will be normal, judging from conversations with my colleagues from other airlines.” Qantas has spoken extensively with other airlines on the matter.
Cooperation with the government considered
Joyce said that document would require a lot of thought, logistics, and possibly government help.
Think of an electronic vaccination pass, which certifies which vaccine the holder has received and if it is accepted at their travel destination.
Lufthansa stated that it did not require its passengers to have a corona vaccination certificate. The introduction of such an obligation is not currently planned, a corporate spokesman in Frankfurt said on Tuesday. The national governments of the countries are also responsible for the respective entry requirements. They would first have to come up with a plan to distribute the requested doses of vaccine as soon as they are available.
Australia has imposed one of the toughest travel restrictions in the world due to the pandemic. International travel is only possible under certain conditions. In the country of 26 million inhabitants, there have been almost 28,000 infections and just over 900 deaths from the virus.
Qantas was founded in 1920 and is one of the oldest continuously operating airlines in the world. Before the corona pandemic, the company carried 50 million passengers worldwide each year.
