With his own signature, the president of Russia sealed a new immunity law. This gives the head of the Kremlin and his family protection for life against prosecution. Until now, this law of inviolability only applied to all actions during the mandate. What’s new is that criminal offenses are also possible that can no longer be prosecuted after leaving the presidency.
Withdrawal of immunity is not impossible, but the obstacles are higher than before. Now a complicated procedure is necessary. Withdrawal will only be possible in the future if there is a charge of high treason or other serious crime. The APA informs that the final decision remains in the hands of the Federation Council.
“What happens if the opposition comes to power?”
The deputy of the Duma, Yuri Sinelschtschikow, of the Communist Party, told the newspaper Vedomosti to justify the new law: “In the future it must be avoided that a former president is brought to justice.” Therefore, the law must be approved, said the parliamentarian.
Putin had only gained broad powers with a constitutional amendment in the summer. In theory, he can remain in office until 2036. The head of the Kremlin has so far left open whether he will run again in the next election in 2024.
