The federal government announces mandatory violent offender counseling. The situation of a particularly vulnerable group is becoming even more precarious: sex workers are excluded from the lockdown income replacement.
“Violence against women and children has no place in our society,” a message that Women’s Minister Susanne Raab and Interior Minister Karl Nehammer (both ÖVP) emphasized on Monday at the beginning of a protection summit of the two-day violence at the Federal Chancellery. The occasion is provided by the “16 Days Against Violence” worldwide, which will draw attention to the issue from November 25 (International Day against Violence against Women) until December 10 (International Human Rights Day ). In October Raab had already promised an additional expenditure of 3.25 million euros for the protection of the lower threshold against violence. The central objective of the current conference, which the Federal Chancellery and the Interior Ministry are organizing with the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) and numerous organizations for the protection of victims and perpetrators, is an even better network in the fight against violence and “that every woman can be sure that she has a place of refuge,” Raab said. “I want all Austrian women to know that there is a way out of the spiral of violence” and that there are institutions “that accept and support them and their children.” In this context, the coordination of victim protection organizations with the police is central. Nehammer announced that the already close network will be further expanded, so raising public awareness is important. But you want to “see where there are still gaps,” Raab said.
