Mandatory school parent representatives do not expect to return to the classroom until January 25. The time until then should be used to evaluate students and vaccinate teachers.
The umbrella organization for parent associations in compulsory public schools calls for weekly corona tests for students and vaccinations for teachers so they can get back to teaching in the classroom. Spokesperson Evelyn Kometter no longer believes in the Ministry of Education’s goal of starting classroom teaching again on January 18. Therefore, the week until January 24 should at least be used to evaluate students and vaccinate teachers.
Manfred Schmidt from the Upper Austria regional association stated in a statement on social media that there would be no requirement for teachers to be vaccinated. There was never talk of a duty.
Classes will start again on January 7 as usual after Christmas break, but as crown-related distance learning. In schools, only those who declare their need will be served. Learning support is also provided, but this does not work well in practice in all settings. It is still open when general face-to-face lessons will begin again.
In principle, the blockade was extended until January 24 due to the opposition’s rejection of the planned “free trial”. At the Ministry of Education, however, reference is made to the currently in force ordinance, according to which “location-independent teaching” is limited to January 17 and face-to-face teaching must start again from January 18. Limitation: The infection process must always be taken into account.
I am not happy with the situation
“All parents are very angry about this situation. There is no safety planning whatsoever, not for students, parents, or teachers,” Kometter criticized. For months now, huge demands have been placed on students and even if distance learning is now working very well, an extra week of distance learning would be “insane”, especially for older students.
The parent spokeswoman referred to cases in all federal states where secondary level 1 (middle school, lower level AHS) and secondary level 2 (especially upper level AHS, BMHS) teachers before Christmas in blue letters on a large scale as a warning of a “not enough” in the school message. The reason: Because they failed to do a school assignment or a test during classroom teaching, they lack an assessment basis. According to Kometter, schoolwork and tests were just one of several types of performance appraisal under the performance appraisal ordinance.
“Other ways to determine performance”
In response to a request from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Education emphasized that even when switching to distance education, there was the option of taking students to schools for school work and exams. In addition, there are other ways to determine performance, independent of Corona, such as cooperation, and this can also be determined in distance education. That is also the reason why, despite the few face-to-face phases in the current semester, there should be a school message in any case: the students had achieved something in distance education and that should also be documented, argues the department. of Education.
If lessons really only start over on January 25 and not January 18, that would mean even less time for exams, complains Kometter. Some parents have invested a lot of money in tutoring over the Christmas holidays so their children can catch up. However, from the point of view of the parent representatives, the later start date is more realistic.
For students in Vienna and Lower Austria, an extension of distance learning would mean that they would only have one week of face-to-face lessons before starting their one-week semester break on February 1. There would be slightly more class days in the classroom in the other federal states, where holidays do not start until February 8 (Burgenland, Carinthia, Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg) or February 15 (Upper Austria, Styria).
