The number of new corona infections hit a new record on Thursday. Rumors of a possible second lockdown have been around for a long time.
Until now, the federal government has always denied the reports. In view of the record values of Corona in Austria, the tide now seems to be turning, ÖVP Economy Minister Margarete Schramböck does not rule out a new lockdown.
“I don’t have a crystal ball”
Health Minister Rudolf Anschober has so far referred to reports of possible exit restrictions – rumored at the end of October or the end of the year – as “duck” or even “duck farm”, and Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler as “pulled the hair”. But in an interview with the “Kleine Zeitung”, the economy minister no longer completely ruled out such a drastic step as in the spring.
“I don’t have a crystal ball. Isreal didn’t think it would come to that either. Now people are talking about boroughs in New York. That should give us pause,” explains Schramböck, taking Vienna in particular into account. An earlier curfew would be needed, “that shouldn’t depend on a choice.” What is meant is the election of the Vienna city council next Sunday.
However, with this turquoise blow, he fell on deaf and red ears to the mayor of Vienna. He sticks to his no to curfew at 1 AM. “Unfortunately, we are forced to take steps that are unpleasant but necessary,” said Michael Ludwig. “There are some who have not recognized the seriousness of the situation and who simply do not want to follow the rules.”
