It’s an additional and powerful tightening of the crown measurements, so the way it was communicated yesterday was somewhat surprising. The chancellery announced that the curfew for gastronomy will be brought forward to 10 pm in Tirol, Vorarlberg and Salzburg.
The measure applies from the day after tomorrow, Friday, and is initially limited to three weeks. Governors Günther Platter (Tyrol), Markus Wallner (Vorarlberg) and Wilfried Haslauer (Salzburg, all vice-president) defended the measure as “absolutely necessary” in view of the increasing number of infections. He is “aware” that this is “a hard blow” for “already battered gastronomy”, says Plato, but there is no alternative to measure. He also asked for mandatory registration for guests. Haslauer spoke of “rampant nightclub celebrations” as the “greatest risk of spread.”
According to the federal government’s crown traffic light, Salzburg was in a much better position than Tirol and Vorarlberg in the previous week: only the city of Salzburg was colored yellow, all other districts green. In Tyrol there were only a few greens and, in addition to yellow, also some orange districts, Vorarlberg is only colored yellow and orange. The Crown Commission will reassess the situation tomorrow.
Upper Austria stays at 1 o’clock
In Upper Austria, where yellow predominates, Governor Thomas Stelzer saw no reason to go ahead with his fellow vice-presidents. According to Stelzer, he was in favor of a policy “with measure and objective”, and the toughening of regulations at the national level had “barely” entered into force. But even if that step is not necessary “from the current perspective”, “nothing can be excluded” for the future. The deputy governor of the FP, Manfred Haimbuchner, warned against the delay, which would be “the death sentence” for the catering industry.
Health Minister Rudi Anschober (Greens) praised the additional regional measures as “good”. Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (VP) hoped “that other federal states, especially those with a high number of infections, will follow suit.” This mainly refers to Vienna, where half of all new infections in Austria were recently recorded for days.
But the campaigning mayor of Vienna, Michael Ludwig (SP), wants nothing to do with it. He spoke of the “Hü-hott policy”, in which the measures were constantly modified, and also warned of an increase in unauthorized gatherings in previous curfews. Kurz also fell on deaf ears with his party colleague Johanna Mikl-Leitner in Lower Austria: Vienna and Lower Austria would only take steps here, Ludwig referred to a deal with Mikl-Leitner. There are also some corona hot spots in Lower Austria.
The reason for the shift in the west axis is likely to be concerns about winter tourism. Since yesterday, Innsbruck has also been hit by a travel warning for the first time – the Netherlands has issued a travel warning for both Vienna and the Tyrolean capital. In her appeal, Kurz also referred to the threat of more travel advisories as a brake on tourism.
The regulations for winter tourism announced by the government are still in effect, and will be presented “soon”, according to the responsible departments.
Corona’s numbers yesterday saw the number of actively infected people decline to 8,220 (new infections: 645) for the first time in a long time, but the number of Covid hospital patients has increased slightly.
Crown laws
Today the new crown measures will be approved in the National Council. The SPÖ accepts following the latest changes, such as the limitation of the measures law until June 2021. This means that a delay in the resolution that the SPÖ and the FPÖ could have achieved is off the table, and the Federal Council is also meet this week. Today the FPÖ wants to present a motion of censure to the government, the Neos consider the laws unconstitutional. (Yes)
