Liverpool have surprisingly been wrong in the Premier League. The English champions only scored 1-1 on Sunday in front of 2,000 spectators at Anfield Road against penultimate West Bromwich Albion. The Reds are still leading with 32 points, three points ahead of Everton, who won 1-0 at Sheffield on Saturday.
Against West Brom, Sadio Mané gave the defending champions an early lead after a pass from Joel Matip in the 12th minute. Coach Jürgen Klopp’s team failed to make an early decision despite nearly 80 percent possession and a multitude of possibilities.
In the final phase, the teacher suddenly began to reel and the outsider with new coach Sam Allardyce became more brash. Karlan Grant failed first in the 72nd minute against Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker. Ten minutes later, the Brazilian had no chance: after a corner kick, a header from Semi Ajayi went from the inside post to the goal. Shortly before the end, Roberto Firmino missed the winning goal with a header, West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone directed the ball around the bar.
More bitter news for Klopp, who also received a yellow card due to criticism from the referee: central defender Matip had to be replaced after almost 60 minutes with a groin injury. Especially in the middle of defense there are few alternatives after the long-term failures of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez. At the end of the year, Liverpool will visit midsize Newcastle United on Wednesday.
Tottenham also fails
Tottenham drew 1-1 against the Wolves in the afternoon game at Molineux. Tanguy NDombèlé put the Spurs ahead after just 58 seconds. Romain Saïss tied the Wolves fighters four minutes before the end of regular time.
This slid Spurs into the Premier League table from fifth place. After matchday 12 (mid-December) they had still led them.
