Even before the crown crisis, there were worrying developments in Vienna, for example in the areas of business and work. Last year, Vienna had the highest unemployment rate in Austria. The proportion of the unemployed in Vienna in the total number of Austria has increased in the last ten years from almost 30 to almost 40 percent. “When it comes to prosperity in this city, other federal states have developed better in recent years,” Blümel said. Just before red-green, Vienna also ranked first of all federal states when it came to disposable family income. First of all, the labor tax must finally be abolished. “We have to make it as easy as possible to create jobs for entrepreneurs,” Blümel said. The city of Vienna collects this tax from employers who do not exist in any other federal state and thus becomes a € 70 million Köberlgeld per year. This rise in labor prices must end. “Second: No more weird taxes!” Says Blümel. The Vienna air tax, which applies to signs and has been outdated for a long time, should also be permanently abolished. Also in the last period, the absurd entertainment tax was abolished under pressure from the new Vienna People’s Party. “Now the air tax has to disappear as well,” Blümel said.
The implementation of tourist areas is also urgently required. Vienna is the only federal state where tourists cannot go shopping on Sundays. There are now almost 500 tourist areas in Austria, not a single one in the capital Vienna. “Even in the holy land of Tyrol, tourists can go shopping on Sundays, but not in Vienna. And the situation in Vienna is particularly strange, because we all know the images of the crowded city center before Christmas, “said Blümel. During this time, tourists make their way from the opera to Schwedenplatz, hop on the bus there on Sunday, and head to Bratislava, where they spend money and shop, and then return to Vienna. “This is probably the worst form of tourism policy imaginable,” said the top candidate. Vienna needs a boost right now, and if tourists return, tourist areas could generate around 140 million more store revenues, around 800 jobs. “That is exactly what Vienna would need. We want to return Vienna to the forefront of prosperity, because that is what Vienna deserves, “emphasizes Blümel.
