Police Report: Avalanche Release: Alpine Accident – Lungau

THOMATAL. On the morning of January 3, 2021, an alpine accident occurred in which the 28-year-old Styrian suffered serious injuries, police report.

Buried by avalanche

A total of four touring skiers (depending on the Lungau mountain rescue or the Murau district) climbed in the direction of Königstuhl when a slab of snow fell off at an altitude of 2000 meters on the touring skiers and caught all the athletes alpine. The 28-year-old completely buried, it is said, was located and unearthed by his companions. After mountain rescue first aid, the Styrian was transferred to Villach hospital by rescue helicopter. His unharmed companions could have left alone.
The mountain rescue team, the police, the avalanche warning commission and the rescue helicopter were on duty, the executive concludes in his report.

Avalanche warning

Due to the current tense avalanche situation in Lungau Nockberge, Lungau Mountain Rescue District Director Hannes Kocher asked tourists to behave defensively on the mountain or to refrain from ski tours.

“In regards to avalanche alert level, today was another tense trio.”

As the mountain rescue team summarizes, there have already been several avalanches this week in the Lungau, in which touring skiers or alternative cyclists were partially or fully buried, but fortunately not more seriously injured.
