Poles protest against abortion ban in Vienna: readers

Thousands of people have demonstrated in Poland for days against the tightening of the abortion ban. Also in Vienna people show solidarity with women.

For six days, thousands of people in Poland have protested against the decision of the Polish Constitutional Court that abortions due to serious malformations of the fetus are also unconstitutional. Also in Vienna there was a demonstration in the Human Rights Square on Wednesday evening. On Facebook, the organizers invited a “vigil against the ban on abortion in Poland”, in which hundreds of people stood in solidarity with the women of Poland.

Protests in various Polish cities

For several days, the television station “TVN24” has been showing images of protesters from Polish cities, the posters with the words “Keep your distance from my belly!” or “Get your hands off my body!” carried. Some of the highest judges and politicians of the right-wing conservative PiS party (“Prawo i Sprawiedliwosc”, in English “Law and Justice”) asked the question “Aren’t you ashamed?” The judges and politicians had “decided against them through women,” criticized participants at the rally in Poland.

The controversial decision of the constitutional judge means a further tightening of the already strict abortion law in Catholic Poland. Until now, there was an exception to the prohibition of abortion in the event that the fetus had serious malformations. This legal norm violates the constitutionally guaranteed right to life, the highest judges decided based on a complaint filed by conservative parliamentarians.

In 2019, only around 1,100 abortions were carried out in hospitals in Poland, in almost all cases due to the paragraph that has now been declared illegal.
