The Archdiocese of Salzburg is reacting to the growing number of Corona: there are no joint celebrations in the cemetery on All Saints’ Day.
PINZGAU. Visiting graves, commemorating the deceased, and praying for them is part of All Saints ‘Day and All Souls’ Day for many. Due to the increasing number of wreaths, this year there should be no joint celebrations in the cemetery, the Austrian Bishops’ Conference decided on Thursday.

The Archbishop of Salzburg, Franz Lackner, who chairs the Episcopal Conference, underlines: “For us Christians, the common prayer for the deceased, to whom we owe much, is extremely important. We are very sorry that the situation has reached a critical point in the last few weeks. and now we have to make arrangements regarding the joint cemetery celebrations. “
Mittersill: no official celebration
In Mittersill, the convocation of the Austrian Episcopal Conference is also being followed and there is no community celebration. “The service is in the morning, but there will be no official grave ceremony this year,” said Pastor Adalbert Dlugopolsky. On All Souls Day, the process remains the same, as there is much less that day. The graves are blessed both days.

Holy water bottle and prayer
If you wish, you can also bless the graves of your loved ones yourself. “For this, bottles of holy water that include a prayer are offered in all churches,” explains Dlugopolsky. “People can take it to the grave, sprinkle it with holy water and pray for the deceased,” the pastor said.
“Anyone who wants a pastor or deacon to accompany them, of course, if possible, can agree with us. Otherwise, everyone can come at any time. The community celebration at the cemetery only had to be canceled because everyone would have come at the same time. ” Those who prefer to stay at home can “of course pray for the deceased at home,” emphasizes the parish priest.
1000 lights night
To get you in the mood for the All Saints Day and All Souls Day festivities, some parish churches, such as those in Mittersill and Saalfelden, will once again glow by candlelight this year.
“This action has the support of Catholic youth and is very well received,” Dlugopolsky said. “We’re trying to start a space where visitors can take a break. That’s really very nice and consistent.”
