In Paris, the Eiffel Tower was evacuated for several hours on Wednesday due to a bomb alarm. According to local police, several hundred people have been taken to safety. The building was reopened to visitors around 2:30 pm (local time). According to consistent reports, no explosive material was found during an inspection of the tower.

In the morning, the police had received a warning that there might be an explosive device in the building. First, the station BFM Paris reported about it. The evacuation was silent, there was no panic, said a local tour guide from the Reuters news agency.

Between six and seven million people visit the Eiffel Tower each year. In 2020, the number of pandemics decreased due to travel restrictions. The 131-year-old symbol of the city is open every day. In the past, there have been closures due to strikes, bomb threats, or suicides.

Editor’s Note: An earlier version said that around 25,000 tourists visited the Eiffel Tower each year. In fact, there are between six and seven million visitors. We fixed the bug.
