With 12.6 million confirmed corona infections, Europe is the region of the world most affected by the pandemic. More than 305,000 infected people have already died on the continent. In Latin America and the Caribbean there were 11.6 million infections and 411,000 deaths, in Asia about 11 million infections and almost 177,000 deaths from corona.
The country with by far the highest number of cases is the United States. Here there were 9.88 million infections and more than 237,000 deaths. The corona pandemic also had a significant impact on Tuesday’s US presidential election. The United States recently posted a record for the fourth day in a row with at least 131,420 new corona infections. The number of deaths after infection increased by more than 1,000 to more than 237,000, according to Reuters.
Texas is the first US state to exceed the threshold of one million confirmed corona infections. California follows with more than 950,000 proven infections. Worldwide, only nine countries have more cases of infection than Texas, which has 29 million people and more than 10 percent of all infections in the United States.
The massive tests were held again in Slovakia over the weekend. 1.3 million people were examined on Saturday alone, Prime Minister Igor Matovic announced to reporters on Sunday. The proportion who tested positive was 0.63 percent, significantly less than a week ago. This demonstrates the success of the restrictions imposed by the government, said the founder and head of the populist-conservative Ordinary People (OLaNO) movement. According to media reports, there were only a few minor disruptions to the mass testing.
Within two days, from Saturday morning to Sunday night (8:00 p.m.), all residents of approximately two-thirds of the country over the age of ten must undergo a rapid antigen test a second time. The exception were those districts that showed particularly few infections in the first round last weekend.
In Italy, meanwhile, the population shows little willingness to adhere to the new and strict regulations of the Crown. Due to the summer temperatures during the weekend, people stormed parks and green areas in Rome, Naples, Bari and Genoa. In Naples there were multitudes of people by the sea.
For four Italian regions, Lombardy, Piedmont, Valle d’Aosta and Calabria, a partial lockdown has been implemented since Friday, although it is less strict than in spring. Restrictions have been introduced across the country, including a nightly curfew from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am. Exceptions are allowed on the way to work or to the doctor. Museums across the country are closed. Colleges and universities must move to online teaching.
Meanwhile, Israel has further relaxed the crown’s restrictions. Street shops were allowed to reopen Sunday, for the first time since a second closure was imposed in mid-September. In these small businesses, which can be accessed from the street, however, according to a decision of the so-called Corona cabinet, no more than four clients are allowed to be at the same time. Mall stores must remain closed.
