Origin of corona virus: 6 other viruses lurk in bats

The origin of the coronavirus is animal: the WHO assumes it on the basis of numerous scientific studies. Now researchers have found more coronaviruses in bats.

Theory circulates that the Origin of the corona virus It is due to machinations in a laboratory, but everything indicates that the virus started in bats in China at the end of 2019. Now researchers have found six other completely new corona viruses in the bat.

The origin of the coronavirus is probably animal

According to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), the coronavirus originated naturally and has not been manipulated or built in a laboratory. WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib said at a press conference in Geneva on April 21, 2020, according to Tagesschau: “The virus is most likely of animal origin.” Bats are also frequently mentioned in relation to the origin of the coronavirus. The researchers have now found six completely new viruses in them.

Bat research

In an investigation under the program called PREDICT (Preparing for a Pandemic for Global Health Security), researchers examined bats in Myanmar. Their goal was to identify infectious diseases that have the potential to spread from animals to humans. Bats are currently assumed to carry the pathogen Sars-CoV-2, which is transmitted to humans through an intermediate host and causes the Covid-19 coronavirus. Therefore, they are currently considered to be of coronavirus origin.

Scientists follow the theory that bats carry thousands of other coronaviruses. To investigate this, the researchers collected hundreds of saliva and feces samples from 464 bats between 2016 and 2018. Among them were at least eleven different species found in places in Myanmar where people can come in contact with bats. These include places with leisure and cultural activities.

The results of the bat investigation

The scientists examined the genetic sequences they took from saliva and faecal samples and compared them to the genome of known coronaviruses. In fact, they found the following viruses in three species of bats:

  • PREDICT-CoV-90 was found in the domestic bat (Scotophilus heathii).
  • PREDICT-CoV-47 and -82 were found in the free-tailed bat (Chaerephon plicatus).
  • PREDICT-CoV-92, -93 and -96 were found in the round-nosed bat (Hipposideros larvatus).

More research is now needed to determine the potential of these newly discovered viruses, which may have coronavirus origins in the bat, for transmission to other species.

This means the discovery of the origin of the coronavirus.

“Many coronaviruses may not pose a risk to humans. However, if we identify these diseases in animals early on, we have a valuable opportunity to investigate the potential threat,” said Suzan Murray, director of the Global Health Program and Co Smithsonian. -Author of the study according to life sciences. The more scientists know about the origin of the coronavirus, the sooner they can try to prevent a pandemic.

More information on the corona virus

The Chinese city of Wuhan is known to have a corona virus origin. A 57-year-old shrimp vendor is said to be “patient zero.” However, these other (absurd) theories of the origins of the coronavirus haunt the world. And this video shows how the virus spreads in the air.
