In an initial inventory, there was a majority in favor of renaming Makartsteg. For the widow Hanna Feingold, president of the Israeli religious community, this would only be an “emergency solution”, as she told ORF Salzburg. I wanted a postal address: Churfürststrasse should be called Marko-Feingold-Strasse.
Preuner with rejection on Churfürststraße
However, Mayor Harald Preuner (ÖVP) speaks out against this, as he explains to SALZBURG24: “Many Salzburgers are not aware that Churfürststrasse has historical significance.” Archduke Ferdinand of Bavaria, whose electorate is named after the street, started the medical school in Salzburg. “There is some historical background why the name should be kept.”
Makartsteg “predestined”
The mayor also considers the popular Salzach crossing to be more prominent than the Churfürststrasse between Alter Markt and Sigmund-Haffner-Gasse: “The Makartsteg is very frequented by tourists and locals. Also, stories can be told along the walkway. Therefore, he is predestined for it. ” Marko Feingold was also a bridge builder through his work, so there is “no ideal solution” for the mayor.
How do Salzburg residents react to a name change?
But how will the population react to the Makartsteg name change? Preuner believes that if the discussion about the name change ends quickly, the population would support the decision. “The longer the discussion goes on, in the meantime, there are other suggestions on the tray, the more unpleasant the whole thing becomes.” Currently, various parties depend on the consent of Hanna Feingold.
Marko-Feingold-Steg next week?
The mayor now wants to move quickly. A conversation with Hanna Feingold is scheduled for Wednesday, the first decision will be made in the culture committee on Thursday. On Monday of next week the city senate will follow and on Wednesday the municipal council will be final. If all goes according to plan, the Makartsteg could be renamed Marko-Feingold-Steg on Saturday, September 19, the first anniversary of the Holocaust survivor’s death.
