I cordially invite you to a joint search, to cross borders, to a pleasant confrontation with our time “, says the neo-artistic director Kay Voges in the press release with which he announces the programming of his first season.
The recently renovated Volkstheater opens on 8 January with Ernst Jandl’s “Der Raum”, a “stage poem for lighting technicians and sound engineers.” On this first night, Jandl’s mini-drama focuses solely on the house, “a meditation to mark the opening,” says Voges. This is followed by a veritable series of premieres.
The Rimini Protokoll collective kicks off with “Black Box. Phantom Theater for one person” on January 9, during which a spectator (equipped with headphones) is sent on a tour of the Volkstheater every five minutes. Rimini’s mastermind Stefan Kaegi has already been impressed with this project in Stuttgart.
“Get ready for something”
The next day is followed by the Vienna premiere of Voges’ Dortmund production of “Theatermacher” from 2018. On January 14, Chekhov’s adaptation of Susanne Kennedy “Three Sisters” is on the agenda. The performance was highly praised in Munich, critics spoke of “A long-term collaboration with Kennedy is planned, and Florentina Holzinger’s” Etude for an Emergency “planned for May (and adapted for Vienna) comes from the Münchner Kammerspiele.
With these performances, which have already been well received elsewhere, Voges takes a risk in the early days of his leadership. The first real new production is the world premiere with the awkward title “Breaking the 1st Cross or Slaughtering All Assholes”, the first part of a multi-part project by new in-house author Lydia Haider, who won the Audience Award at the competition reading Bachmann in the summer. The director himself is in charge of the production, the premiere is on January 16. Opening week ends on January 17 with “Bliss. Mozart’s Final Aria from The Marriage of Figaro as a Twelve-Hour Opera” by Ragnar Kjartansson on the HD broadcast. Kay Voges begins his address with a wide range of address manuscripts that are new to Vienna.
From Voges Dortmund, the direction follows Samuel Beckett’s “Endspiel” in February; In April, another new Voges production is on the program with Wolfram Lotz’s “Die Politiker”.
And the set? It includes 20 actors, five more than under Anna Badora, most of whom are unknown in this country. Nick Romeo Reiman has made a name for himself as a film actor (“Turkish for beginners”), Julia Franz Richter was recently hired at the Schauspielhaus Graz, Samouil Stoyanov at the Kammerspiele in Munich, but also worked for television (“Soko Munich” ). Anna Rieser, an actress from the Landestheater Linz, who was awarded the Nestroy as “best descendant” in 2019, arrives in Vienna, while Voges brought in seven actors from Dortmund. With Claudia Sabitzer, Evi Kehrstephan, Stefan Suske and Günther Wiederschwinger, four actors from the existing ensemble will remain in the house, Doris Weiner will only be at the Volkstheater this year. Voges hopes to add four more members of the ensemble for next season.
The New Intendant will bring in new directors, for example Jan Friedrich, the trained puppeteer will stage Gerhart Hauptmann’s “Einsame Menschen” on January 30th. Kay Voges and director Sascha Hawemann have worked together for many years; in March it will present an adaptation of Dostoevsky’s “Humiliated and Offended”, and more Dostoevsky productions are planned. Iconoclast Jonathan Meese has also been announced for March with a “universe production” of Lolita. Voges: “We can be ready for something.”
The Volx / Margareten will only be played once during the next year. The Fronte Vacuo group shows the digital experiment “Humane Metholds [Exhale]”(January 15), instead, the rehearsal stage under the roof will be launched as a new” black box. “
Two world premieres are held for the districts, which the young director Calle Fuhr will take over as head of art production replacing Doris Wiener, and which is described as the “subversive twin of the main building”. The “construction season” can begin.
