The mass screening of Austrians for the corona virus began on Tuesday in the Annaberg-Lungötz municipality in Salzburg. Only two of the 653 tests were positive. The test is scheduled for two days and will be completed on Wednesday night. The first large-scale mass tests will be carried out from Friday, then people in Vienna, Vorarlberg and Tirol will be asked to fade.
The snow cannons not far from the fire station are firing at full speed, and this Tuesday morning a small line of people stood in front of the building in the freezing cold: Annaberg in Salzburg’s Tennengau is the first scene in Austria of a massive crown test. And right at the beginning of sunrise, it draws not only the locals behind the stove, but also a bunch of journalists and TV crews for the only chance to take pictures and film at the fire station.
Reporters have even traveled from abroad, with German interest in particular, as evidenced by the crews of the German television stations RTL and NTV. Those who wait, women and men, young and old, first disappear briefly in a red awning, in which data is recorded with the help of a firefighter: the e-card number or the telephone number, for example.
First intermediate balance
A few hours after the start of the first massive test of the Austrian crown in the municipality of Annaberg-Lungötz in Salzburg, the officials took a first intermediate balance on Tuesday morning and were quite satisfied with the route. Above all, it helped that the experiences of South Tyrol flow into the planning, which has already completed a massive screening, reported State Rescue Commander Anton Holzer.
Almost three hours after the start of the tests, specifically at 10.45 am, some 250 locals had come to take the sample at the Annaberg fire station. So far, the test has only been positive for one person, the Salzburg native reported. Governor Wilfried Haslauer (ÖVP). The person in question was asked to stay home until the new acceptance test of a PCR test. The proportion of the younger population was still a bit low in the morning, but this age group is expected to participate more strongly around 6 p.m.
South Tyrol as a role model
In a media talk, Holzer described that the Salzburg Red Cross had exchanged experiences in videoconferencing with the White Cross in South Tyrol. The concept of South Tyrol then flowed into the Salzburg preparations. Timetables and forms were even made available and used as templates for those in Salzburg. “That was very useful for us,” said the rescue commander.
According to Haslauer, the evaluation in the small community was divided into two days so that you can evaluate after the first day and make changes for the second day if necessary. “So far everything has gone smoothly.” He expects a total of 60 percent of the population to come to the test in the two days, a rate he also awaits for the national screening on December 11-13. “I am very confident that the process that works here will also prove its worth in national testing.” The governor also announced today that there will also be a comprehensive test of the retirement homes on December 14, because it is unreasonable for their residents to go to the test sites.
According to Holzer, the Red Cross will need around 900 paramedics for the big test weekend, and will therefore deploy around a third of all equipment to the rescue service. Haslauer expects between 3,000 and 4,000 corona positive cases to be discovered.
According to his statements, the financial compensation for the staff during the tests is now also true: those assistants who make the cuts should receive 20 euros an hour tax free, the assistants 10 euros an hour.
