As of today, Friday, they are all districts and regions in Austria at the Corona traffic lights changed to red. At Thursday’s meeting of the Crown Commission, it was decided that the risk of infection with the corona virus is very high throughout Austria. The yellow and orange spots, which were very rare before, have now disappeared.

Health Minister Rudolf anschober (Greens) has been explaining the background to this decision at a press conference since 9.30 a.m. It will also provide perspective on how to deal with the pandemic.

There are currently 6,464 new infections, slightly less than the previous day (7,400). The reason for this is that several late registrations were included in the figures on Thursday. In any case, the total number continues to rise rapidly and is alarming, according to Anschober. In 72 percent of cases, the source of the infection is now unclear. In the previous week, the number was 50 percent.

The total number of deaths is particularly worrying: “This is the first time that we have strong growth also in Austria.” There were 72 deaths from corona in Austria in 24 hours.

The seven-day incidence nearly doubled from 260 to 405 in one week, so Daniela schmid, Head of the Traffic Light Commission.

The appeal of the ankle:

  • Wear the mask and don’t believe the fake news that it doesn’t work.
  • In fact, stay only when you have an isolation notice.
  • Tell the truth about contact management.

The minister is optimistic that there will be a “remarkable stabilization” next week, with a real reduction in the figures that is not expected until ten days after the entry into force of the latest measures. By the end of next week, these measures would be evaluated by the traffic light commission. The next steps in schools will also depend on this. The age group up to 25 years in particular is watched intensively to be able to assess the infection rate.

Children as young as 14 are still less affected, and the infection is increasingly running in the family, says Schmid. School groups for children ages 10-14 would be brought to schools by adults. The question arises whether closing the schools would have the desired effect. No school closings are planned at this time.

Anschober added that it is also monitored and evaluated on a daily basis. In the event of an alarming event, of course, we would react earlier. Both emphasized that measures are important, but each individual could do more to slow development:

  • Everyone can decide for themselves how high the risk of transmitting the virus to themselves is.
  • Austria will “certainly not give up” on contact tracing, even if there are constant reports to the contrary: but everyone must tell the truth there and indicate all contacts.

Over 64 percent for intensive care beds

You have the number of intensive care beds in view, including the staff reserve. The use of intensive care beds has increased by 64 percent in the past seven days. Anschober reiterated fears that there could be a bottleneck in the intensive care units in mid-November and that doctors would then have to decide who would continue to receive treatment and who would not. This situation already exists in some subregions of Europe.

Nursing homes and nursing homes are also in the spotlight: many antigen tests have already been distributed and, “thank goodness,” there are no bottlenecks.

The gravity of the situation is slowly reaching the population and the restrictions are being observed more and more. Particularly important are the district captains, who, now that the whole of Austria has turned red, are practically all at Friday’s meetings. They listen to the population and are important multipliers.

On Thursday there were some rumors about further tightening of the measures, for example in the school sector. Minister of Education Heinz Fassmann (ÖVP) ruled out the closure of schools.
