Tokyo – Saturday March 20, 2021, 12:15 pm
There has already been speculation about it in recent weeks, now it is fixed! At the Summer Olympics in Tokyo (July 23 to August 8), foreign fans are not allowed to enter Japan due to the corona pandemic.
The Japanese organizers will announce this decision to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the organizers of the Paralympic Games in a video conference on Saturday. The reason for the decision is the fear that the coronavirus will spread further.
Ticket refund for fans abroad
The IOC and the International Paralympic Committee “fully respected and accepted” the decision, he said. Buyers of tickets from abroad should be reimbursed for costs. So far, around a million tickets have been sold to fans abroad.
For the organizers’ planned budget, the loss of ticket revenue is a serious blow. In addition, there are considerable consequences for the tourism industry, which expected a lot of money from the Olympic guests and the publicity effect.
The situation for Japanese fans is still unclear.
So far 4.5 million tickets have gone to Japanese buyers. Whether locals will be able to enter the arenas at the Olympic and Paralympic Games must be decided by the end of April. In polls, a clear majority of Japanese had recently spoken in favor of relocating the summer games, which had already been postponed for a year, or even rejecting it altogether. Organizers of the Olympics are striving to gain confidence for the event with strict measures in the fight against the corona pandemic.
The new head of organization, Seiko Hashimoto, had urged foreign Olympic fans to make a decision before the start of the Olympic torch relay on March 25. IOC chief Thomas Bach had already voiced his support for the spectator exclusion case before the deliberations.
“We have to put the safety of all the participants in the Games and the Japanese, for whom we already owe them great respect,” said Bach. We must demand sacrifices from everyone and ask for their understanding, said the German.
