Taxiarchis Fountas has no favorites ahead of Wednesday’s international test match in Klagenfurt between Austria and Greece (8.30pm, live on ORF1). “Of course I wait for Greece, but I estimate the chances are 50:50,” said the Rapid striker, who is part of the guest squad. “It is sure to be an exciting match.”

Fountas has played four international matches and is still awaiting his first goal for the national team. In Slovenia’s 0-0 Nations League win on September 3, the 25-year-old played a 15-minute span, followed by the next 2-1 away win against Kosovo from the bench.

Given that team boss John van ‘t Schip at the Wörthersee stadium will likely experience regarding the following Nations League duels with Moldova and Kosovo, Founta’s chances of being deployed early on are to be expected. “Of course I hope to play and be able to help the national team in that way, but the line-up is not made by me, but by our coach,” said the goalkeeper.

“Strong team with great quality”

Fountas also recorded the many failures in the ÖFB team. “That is certainly a great advantage for Greece, but Austria still has a very strong team with great quality,” he said.

Unlike the ÖFB team, Greece missed out on qualifying for the European Championship. Fountas has now marked this mishap. “You have to look ahead, that’s always a footballer’s motto, and then set new goals so you can do better next time.”

Fountas is very confident in the Austrians in the upcoming finals. “Surely a lot will be possible, the team is of good quality and there are many excellent players who can be called up,” said the attacker.
