Due to massive reductions in freight and passenger transport, ÖBB wants around € 500 million from the state. At least half of this should go to ÖBB Rail Cargo, the rest to passenger traffic.
Due to the sharp decline in international rail freight transport due to the corona virus crisis, ÖBB Rail Cargo apparently needs state aid. The newspaper “Der Standard” put the suit on Thursday at “at least 250 million euros,” citing inside information. But ÖBB passenger transport may also ask for help.
According to the newspaper, government circles expect a financial requirement of around 500 million euros for the entire Bundesbahn group. ÖBB is already in direct negotiations with the Ministry of Finance, but they are not yet as advanced as with the AUA. There were no official statements from the Ministry of Finance or ÖBB.
Massive decrease in passengers
Not only in freight, but also in passenger transport, the ÖBB saw a massive decrease in passenger numbers due to the Corona crisis and may therefore need state aid, according to the report. ÖBB has not yet been able to quantify how high the turnover loss is in passenger transport. Possibly more details will be given in the numbers template on Friday. The Western Railway, however, anticipates a failure of around 16 euros per kilometer or a total of around seven million euros, writes the “Standard”.
It had already been known last week that, according to a preliminary estimate, ÖBB had to send around 10,000 employees on short-term jobs.
